Who is Jesus? Advent Day 16: The Rock

The Lord is called the Rock all throughout scripture, but one person who called Him the Rock is especially notable because she said it following a mighty sacrifice. This particular verse in the Old Testament is weighty when the context is studied and meditated over.

No one is holy like the Lord , For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.
1 Samuel 2: 22

That was part of Hannah’s prayer to the Lord exalting Him as she left young Samuel with Eli the priest when she followed through with her promise to dedicate her miracle baby to the Lord. How could a mother hand over her young son to be raised in the temple? How could she allow him to pass through her arms when he was the child she cried out for, prayed for, contended for, and begged the Lord to give her?

There is one answer, and it is found in her prayer declaring there is no rock like our God.She is steadying herself on the revelation that the Lord is a firm place. He is holy ground and there is no other solid foundation to stand but in Him. That means Hannah made the Lord her foundation.

She did not have her foundation in motherhood, in her husband, or in any other comfort. Those things are good things. They are assignments from the Lord, but they are not the foundation of a solid life.

The only sure foundation is the Lord. From that revelation that there is no rock like our God, Hannah kept her promise to give her son to the service of the Lord. Dedicating Samuel to the Lord allowed her son to be used mightily as a prophet of the Lord. He was not a Levite, yet he was employed in priestly duties. He heard the Lord’s voice from a young age when the voice of the Lord had become rare.

He was the prophet who anointed King Saul and King David. Samuel was a pure prophet among an evil generation. He was able to walk in his destiny because of a praying momma. Hannah bravely chose the Lord as her rock and refuge and trusted Him with her firstborn son. Hannah was blessed with more children after Samuel and traveled to the temple annually to see her son. What a joy it must have been to her momma’s heart to watch her son grow up loving the Lord just like her.

The Rock is found throughout the Old Testament as a place of safety with God. King David calls the Lord a Rock multiple times in the Books of 2 Samuel and Psalms. One interesting thought to ponder, what types of conversations did Samuel and King David have that aren’t recorded in scripture?

David was “a man  after God’s own heart” and Samuel was a prophet who heard directly from the Lord. These two mighty men of God must have had some incredible talks about the Lord!

Jesus had this to say about building on the Rock of His Word:

Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on theRockk. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on theRockk. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24‭-‬27

The Rock of Jesus is a place where you can climb for safety and rest when you need to get above the storm. This Rock is higher than your earthly perspective and gets you into His arms, where you can find peace, deliverance, and whatever you need to continue in the direction He has set for you.The Rock of Jesus will hold you steady and secure through this life and right into eternal life. On this Rock, you are safe from even the sting of death. The Rock of Jesus is the ultimate hurricane shelter. The winds may blow, the rain may come, but if you are grounded, tethered, and secured by the Rock of His Word, you won’t be moved from the Rock.

When Jesus is your Rock and your life is built on His Word, there is a steady force that keeps you tied to Him. His internal assurance is that no matter what comes, you will not be shaken away from the foundation of Christ.

You will make it, you will survive, you will come out on the other side strong and secure.

His Word will also hold you steady and secure when strange teachings or culture try to sway you away.

His Word is the Rock that can be counted on through the ages.

His Word stands the test of time. He changes not. Every promise, every prophecy, and every instruction in the written Word are truths you can build your life upon.

Dear Lord,
I cling to You today as my Rock. I trust that You will keep me safe, steady, and protected as I cling to You and Your Word. I will build my life on Your Word even when it’s unpopular. I cling to Your Word even when I don’t like what it says. I cling to Your Word as my Rock today. Set me steady and firm on the Rock of Jesus Christ.
                                       In Jesus name, Amen.
