Why is Jesus called the Alpha and Omega?

Revelation is a book of promises that Jesus will fulfill. Much of Revelation is in red, meaning it is the direct spoken words of Jesus. Notice that four times in Revelation, He calls Himself the Alpha and Omega, translating into the beginning and the end.

I am the Alpha and the Omega,  the  Beginning and  the  End,”  says the Lord,   “who is and who is to come, the   Almighty.” Revelation 1: 8

Then, Jesus Repeats Himself in Revelation 1: 11, and the next time He says it, He adds a gift!

And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will freely give the fountain of the water of life to him who thirsts. Revelation 21: 6

In the final chapter of the Bible’s final book, Jesus uses three sets of synonyms that describe Him as the start and the finish!

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” Revelation 22: 13

Jesus was there in Genesis, speaking the whole world into  existence.  Every book of the bible is the revealing of Christ. All of the Old Testament books point towards Him.

Then, the New Testament opens with four books that chronicle His earthly life, while the rest of the New Testament details the birth of the church and the continuation of the work that Jesus began. The bible ends with Revelation, a detailed account of the final judgement and restoration.

Jesus had the FIRST say at Creation and He will have the FINAL say in the end. The end will actually be a new beginning as the Lord Jesus creates a new heaven and earth totally restored.

The plan was written in the heavenly realm long before Mary conceived Jesus. And the plan all pointed toward redemption of everything Adam, the first man, handed over to the enemy. Now, the Lord Himself would become man, and conquer the enemy, triumphing over death. Jesus came in flesh with the assignment to die. He was setting free His creation from the chains of sin.

Now instead of having the sin nature that we are born with, we are brand NEW creations who are given the likeness of Christ, the mind of Christ, and the Holy Spirit to empower us to stay in faith all the way to the end.

And, Jesus WILL return! But He is not coming as a meek and mild baby this time. He is returning as the conquering King of Judah who will finish everything. He speaks in Revelation and makes it clear who He Is. He IS both the beginning and the end. He will finish what He started. Genesis reveals the Lord’s original design for man, which was close relationship with Him and man having dominion over Creation. Revelation is directly from Jesus to the Church, which represents all followers of Jesus.

This final book of the Bible reveals His plan to bring His Creation back to a restored state that looks like His original design. The Lord’s beginning plans were good. The Lord’s ending plans are good. No power of hell, scheme, or plot of the enemy can stop the Lord’s good plans from fulfillment.

Adam and Eve may have made a temporary plot twist, but the Lord’s Word never returns void. When He breathed breath into Adam and called humanity “very good,” He meant it. And though evil appears to prevail at times, the book of Revelation is the spoiler alert.

God Wins!

He is Alpha and Omega. He is the beginning of everything—the One who authored creation and spoke the world into existence!AndD He will return to finish it, redeem it, and victoriously set up a new, restored heaven and earth.

He is the beginning who said, “Let there be light.”

And He is the end with, “I am coming back!”

This Name of God brings assurance that He is going to carry out every Word spoken, and His plans of good for humanity will prevail. Jesus is the start and end of everything, so of course He also cares for the in between chapters as well. You can rest today knowing that He who Created everything is working out a final restoration plan for your life, your family, and your future. Every burden you are carrying today can be handed over to the One who carried the cross.

He will finish the restoration process He began in you and make all things NEW.

It all starts with Jesus.
It all ends with Jesus.
He is, and was, and is to come.
We will see and hear Him as He triumphs over all things that hurt His people.
We will behold the triumphant ending.
We will be resurrected, and death will have no hold on us, all because of a Good God who has promised to finish the story with an ending as good as the beginning!

Dear Lord,
What glorious things have taken place and what glorious things are ahead for those who place their trust in Christ alone. Thank You, Lord, for all You have done, all you are doing, and all that is still to unfold. You are the beginning, the end, and every chapter in the middle.

                                      In Jesus Name, Amen
