In Revelation, Jesus is speaking to the churches and He gives them this promise which is a promise for us as well:
To the One who overcomes and is victorious, I will give the morning star. Revelation 2: 26-28
Then, later in the last chapter of Revelation near the end, He reveals Himself as the Bright Morning Star. The one who oversomes will receive Jesus and all of the beautiful promises that come from Him.
He gives many of His Names in Revelation, and many of them connect the Old Testament prophecies and the gospels together in a beautiful, completed picture of love and restoration.
I Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” Revelation 22:16
A morning star is the brightest light in the sky in the early morning before the sun rises. It is the planet of Venus and it appears to shines brighter than all of the stars. It doesn’t twinkle like stars, but instead appears as a steady, constant glow in the dark before the rising sun and in the evenings after the sun sets. It’s a light that outshines the rest and is noticeable for its brilliance amidst the dark.In the book of Matthew, three of Jesus’s disciples saw a glimpse of Jesus in His glorified body.
He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. Matthew 17:2
Then, in the book of 2 Peter, Peter remembered this special moment and called Jesus the morning star that will rise in our hearts. Peter, the disciple who recognized Jesus as the Christ, also correctly named Him Morning Star. Jesus is the Bright Morning Star who outshines all darkness, and He is brighter than any counterfeit light.
What God creates, satan tries to distort. In the Old Testament we read that satan was referred to as a morning star. But, satan was charged with becoming filled with pride and attempting to be like God. Throughout the Bible, satan continually tried to offer people a counterfeit that would strip them of God’s best for them. In the end, Jesus restores ALL back to perfect order.
When Jesus named Himself the Bright Morning Star in Revelation, He is clarifying that, “He is the Real Deal.” He is the authentic and true Light. Satan may have been a type of morning star as we know he was an angel who led worship and was very beautiful. Yet, even in his angelic state prior to being cast down, he was never EVER comparable to the ONE Bright Morning Star who simply spoke and light burst forth.
Notice His first act at Creation was, “Let there be light.” Imagine that, the source of light spoke and light came to shine on earth. Light that gives energy and sustains life on earth. His very first creative work was to give the world light! Then, in the final chapter of Revelation, Jesus reveals Himself as the Morning Star. The bible opens and closes with the light! The first chapter of the bible and the last chapter of the bible, reveal the Lord as both the Creator of light and as the Light itself.
When Jesus stated,
“I AM the root and offspring of David and I AM the Bright Morning Star.” Revelation 22: 16
These names are related to the other name Jesus gives Himself which is simply, “I am”. Jesus is so so clear about WHO He is! He is the Lord Himself who came in flesh as a baby born right into the messy, sin filled world.
He came to be the light of the whole world, cleansing it from all iniquity, healing sickness, casting out demonic oppression, and setting the captives FREE!
He is STILL doing these miracles through Holy Spirit filled believers today. His light shines through every surrendered believer.
He is both Lord and Savior.
He is Redeemer and King.
He is both the Sacrificial Lamb and the Triumphant One.
He is the root and offspring of David.
He is the Bright Morning Star.
He IS WHO HE Says HE IS!
You can trust Him! Jesus will be the Light source of heaven. His light is steady, immovable, and does not even flicker. His light is faithful and true. Even more guaranteed than the sun you see daily, is the Morning Star of heaven. He is the place you can flee when your world feels dark and shadowy. He promises that the trials and troubles of this life will all pass away when He wipes every tear from our eyes and is the source of light for all of eternity.
Dear Lord,
I choose to look to You as the Bright Morning Star. The immovable, steady stream of light in my life even when everything seems dark. I will seek Your face amidst the darkness. I will choose Your Word over what I experience. Help me to be more eternally minded. May I live with holy expectation of what lies ahead when You are the light source of Heaven.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
