Good Morning Gorgeous,
It’s a brand new day. A fresh new start. A new day to rise and be the light of the world!
After Jesus told His disciples that they were the salt of the earth, He called them the light of the world.
Another strong Holy assignment because you see Jesus Himself was the light of the world. He is referred to in the bible again and again as the light.
The gospel of John refers to Him as the light that was coming into the world.
He was prophesied about as the light in the Old Testament.
When he was dedicated in the temple, there was a devout woman there who had been given a promise that she would see the Messiah before she passed. When she saw Jesus this is part of what she said…
John the Baptist told people that he wasn’t the light, but only making a way for the light.
So, if Jesus is the light of the whole world , then how are we to be the light?
Here is what Jesus said to His disciples:
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV
He was transferring His power of giving light to them! And also eventually to us!!
He came to be the light of the world, and then when He ascended to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to take up residence in the hearts of believers. We are now the temple or house of God, and because Jesus dwells on the inside of us, we are now the light of the whole world!
How do we be the light? When we are believers in Jesus Christ who have put our trust in Him, and follow His ways, His Holy Spirit shines through us and makes us the light. As we are walking with Jesus and continually sanctified, we begin to look more like Him and less like our flesh. The more time we spend with Jesus, the more light shines off of us.
To be the light is different than to be the salt. The light is the very source by which we see everything. It is vital to see the truth. It is vital to life. And we are the light shining the truth of Jesus to a dark world. I believe the salt is about what we do. Salt has a job, it flavors. But oh sweet light is different. It just IS! And to be the light, we abide. We learn to just be with Jesus. To fully trust Him and then to become like Him which is filled with light.
Being the salt is about what we do,
But being the light is about who we are in Christ.
To be the light, we simply have to HAVE the light. We can’t steward what we don’t have. To be the light comes from accepting Jesus as our Savior and then after that we are made bright by fellowship and time with Jesus.
A few more amazing thoughts about light…..
Let there be light are the first recorded words by God in the bible. In Genesis 1:3 it states, God said, “Let there be light.”
The light was good! Did you catch that?! And the light is divided from darkness.
Jesus had even more to say about light to His followers:
And He also said this!
Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
John 12:35-36 NKJV
He called them sons of light! They are the children of light representing God as they let their light shine bright.
To be called the light by Jesus was and is a BIG deal.
In heaven, the Lord Himself will be the light. Revelation clearly demonstrates this and it was even prophesied about in Isaiah:
So from Genesis to Revelation, light is a big deal. It’s a life source. It’s first and by which all other things are sustained.
Jesus is the light and He was there at the beginning of creation. He came into the world as prophesied to be our light and then He made all of His believers the light as well!
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You so very much for this fresh revelation about light. I am in awe of How You work! Lord, help us to be the light. Help us to get into Your Presence and be filled with Your light so that we can shine it into the whole world as You have called us to do. Help us to shine the light of Your truth. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
